The Entertainer

This is one of Scott Joplin’s earlier pieces, and certainly one of the most popular.   It has a catchy tune and the typical rhythms of ragtime which make it an ideal solo for the banjo.   The opening phrase of the Introduction is repeated over three octaves, — no problem for the piano, but needing thoughtful placing on the banjo fingerboard, so the piece has been transposed from the original keys  of C and F major up to F and B flat.   In addition, the fingering is carefully arranged so that what could have been a difficult solo is now well within the capabilities of the average banjoist, and at the same time, the editor has managed to retain all the harmonies of the original.
