(The Twiddly Polka)
The sub-title was suggested, partly as a joke, by J.P. Cunninghame, a fine banjoist, and friend of Morley, who was aware of Morley’s continuing difficulty in finding titles at the same rate as composing the music. At that time, the polka was extremely popular, and there were so many being written that is was desirable to identify a piece uniquely if possible.
A very corrupt version, entitled ‘Twiddly Polka’ was published in the BMG about forty years ago, but seems to have been put together from memory by someone who had, perhaps, played it many years before.
My copy of Morley’s manuscript has the title ‘Polka’, and ‘by Joe Morley’, written in his hand, but no more, so I have given the key, and added Cunninghame’s lighthearted description as a suitable title for this publication.
I have seen an MS of this solo listed by the American Banjo Fraternity, in which the title ‘Electra Polka’ has been added by someone; but this is an error, because ‘Electra Polka’ is a different and more difficult solo. However, there is a similarity between these two, and also the ‘Popinjay Polka’, which is not surprising, considering that they were all written by the same composer, and probably about the same time.
