Pierrots Picnic
PIERROTS PICNIC
When Joe Morley wrote this solo—over a hundred years ago—there were many popular black-face minstrel troupes, and so he gave it a title which, acceptable in those times, is considered offensive these days. It is too good a solo to be neglected because of the title, so the name has been slightly changed for this publication so that it can be played without offending a modern audience.
The keys are C major, A minor and F major, but like so many of Morley’s early solos, although it looks fairly simple, there is a need for some quick shifting, especially in the Trio. You are given an optional repeat of that section in Rag-time style as a bonus, with Morley making a reference to Vess Ossman, who was popularising the genre at that time—about 1900.
