Mississippi Breakdowns
MISSISSIPPI BREAKDOWNS
Olly Oakley arranged these short phrases in the form of a novelty piece. The sections are usually of eight bars repeated, and each one has a heading depicting the movements of a Mississippi steamboat. The piece begins with the sub-heading ‘In the distance’, and the dynamic marking ppp, followed by four sections, ‘Boat approaching’; ‘In sight’; ‘Off the Wharf’ and ‘Arrival’. The sections, and their repeats, gradually increase in volume until the ‘Arrival’ which is marked fff.
Then repeats of previous sections are played, gradually getting quieter, with the labels ‘Departure’ and ‘In the distance’, while the last few bars are marked with a very unlikely ppppp. This has been changed to the instruction perdendosi. There is no indication as to the origin of the phrases, so they may all be genuine American breakdowns collected by Oakley, or he may have composed them himself, but the description ‘arranged by’ suggests the former.
