Grandfather’s Clock – Classical Style

This was the original title of the famous song by Henry C. Work, but over the years it seems to have acquired the extra word ‘My’ as part of the name; — due, no doubt, because the first line of the lyrics is: “My grandfather’s clock was too large for the shelf, so it stood ninety years on the floor”.   This arrangement is a straightforward one, with no attempt to copy the bluegrass style, and is pitched in C major.  In the past, most arrangements have been in G major so that harmonics at the twelfth fret can be used to fill in with ‘clock chimes’; in this case, the harmonics are shown as a coda, and are made on the third and fourth strings between the fourth and seventh frets.    This is the kind of easy, effective arrangement which Morley or Grimshaw might have made.
