Dusky Dandy
THE DUSKY DANDY
This is a typical Grimshaw solo: tuneful, easy to play, and always appreciated by audiences, whether they are banjoists or not. It has four sections, two in C, and one each in G and F, plus a short Introduction and a Coda. This is another ideal solo for the beginner, because most of the action takes place below the fifth fret, but there are occasional excursions above, including a daring chord at the tenth position, — although an alternative is given.
The fourth section is a short melody on the bass string with chord accompaniment, and players who have not encountered this style before will find it a useful preparation for the more complicated examples by Morley.
It is unfortunate that the title marks it as having been written in the days of the minstrel shows, but there is no suggestion of ‘the plantation’ about the piece, so with the word ‘Dusky’ omitted, it makes a fine March for the modern banjoist’s repertoire.
