Czardas
CZARDAS
There is some mystery about the title of this solo. About 1907 Joe Morley gave George Morris a MS. bearing the title ‘Bolero’, which was printed in ‘BMG’ many years ago. Two other MSS. are extant, (neither in Morley’s hand), in which there are significant differences from Morris’s version, although it is obviously the same basic piece. They are both titled ‘Czardas’, and are virtually note for note the same, although in different hands, with Morley’s name as the composer. It is on record that Morley pointed out that Cammeyer’s ‘Bolero’ should have been in three-four time, and this piece is in two-four, so it is most likely that Morley made some changes both to the notation and the title some time after giving an original MS. to George Morris. All that apart, anyone who is familiar with the famous ‘Czardas’ by Monti will know that a true czardas consists of two parts which alternate; a slow lassu and a fast friss. In this case we only get the friss, but in the absence of a more suitable title, I have decided to retain this one.
It is a typical Morley ‘bravura’ style solo which he would have played at breathtaking speed, but there is no need to do that; — it is just as enjoyable played at a moderate tempo, although admittedly, it is not a piece for a beginner.
