Calliope Rag
CALLIOPE RAG
This is one of the all-time favourites for banjoists who enjoy playing — and hearing — ragtime music. Calliope, (pronounced Kal-i-opy, with the accent on the ‘i’, as in ‘mine’), was one of the Greek muses, and the name translates as ‘beautiful voice’. In America, the calliope was a steam-organ, such as those used in fairgrounds, and the composer of this piece, James Scott, played a calliope at Lakeside Park, Missouri, probably about the time he wrote it, around 1906. He could well have composed it on the banjo because it fits the fingerboard so well, and for that reason alone it is the kind of piece that should be in every banjoist’s repertoire.
