Bolero

BOLERO

Despite the fact that this piece is not a true bolero, it has remained one of the solos which, over the years, amateur players have used as a measure of their ability.   Cammeyer wrote this Spanish-sounding piece in 4/4 time, and ignored all the critics who pointed out that a bolero should be written in 3/4 time.   Bolero or not, it is an interesting solo in that it includes a short introduction with natural harmonics, and later, a complete section employing artificial harmonics. There is also a short cadenza, and some fairly fast runs up the fingerboard.   It alternates between the keys of C major and C minor, and makes use of the notes around the seventeenth fret and above, which is unfamiliar ground to many, so it will certainly repay most banjoists who spend time in mastering it, because they will improve their technique considerably in the process.
