Bagpipe Patrol
BAGPIPE PATROL
After reluctantly giving up his six-string banjo for a five string instrument, Morley rarely wrote a solo which did not have the fourth string tuned to C. This piece is a notable exception, because the characteristic drone of the bagpipe is imitated by tuning the fourth string down to A, — an octave below the A at the second fret on the third string. There are four sections, two each in A minor and A major, and the piece begins very quietly, building to a climax and then gradually dying away, as the patrol marches off in the distance. It is a very effective novelty piece with no technical difficulties.
