Perhaps not the cheapest vellums money can buy but undoubtedly the best – clean, white, of an even thickness and no tiny holes. Many players prefer a calf skin vellum because they claim they produce a warm superior tone compared to a plastic head.
You must allow at least a 3″ overlap when fitting a calf skin banjo head. A 14″ vellum is suitable for a banjo with an 11″ head diameter or less and a 15″ vellum is suitable for banjos with a 12″ head diameter.

A banjo vellum should be replaced at least every ten years. The older the vellum, the more the tone deteriorates.
Vellums are sent as a tube, classed by Royal Mail as a parcel

Hi Clem, I just wanted to say thank you for my recent order of a 15″ vellum which was for a nice Barnes and Mullins 12 1/4 ” hooped 5 string banjo, probably made by Abbott. I have bought cheaper vellums before but there is no comparison to the lovely quality of the one you supplied. Also the instructions are excellent. I have fitted many vellum before but not in the same way. Your technique made it a lot easier! The main difference was folding the vellum over the flesh hoop and then placing the tension hoop over the top. I’ve never done that before. It made it a lot easier to get the initial fit right. Anyway, thanks again and I’ll not be bothering with cheaper vellums anymore.

I’ve fitted a few vellums over the years, but this is by far the best quality! Even texture and colour, great strength, no pinholes at all. Yes they are more expensive than eBay cheapies but this vellum makes fitting much easier and gives excellent tone. Thanks Clem!
