Planxty

PLANXTY

There is some argument as to the origin of the word ‘Planxty’ which was used for some tunes dedicated to his patrons by the blind Irish harper Turlough O’Carolan, (1670-1738).   An example is ‘Planxty Reilly’ written for John O’Reilly of County Meath.   Some historians think the word could mean ‘health’, in the sense of  “here’s a health to John O’Reilly”, but others suggest it is derived from the Irish word planncaim, which means ‘to strike’ (the strings of a harp).   Whatever the origin, most planxties are lively pieces in six-eight time, as is this one.
