Dora Breakdown
DORA BREAKDOWN
There does not seem to be a definitive modern dictionary reference to the term ‘Breakdown’ as it was used in the banjo compositions of the late 1800s, but the Internet supplies a number of weird and wonderful explanations. Banjo Tutors of the period usually included examples, and they seem to take the form of a quick piece in two-four or four-four time, using dotted quaver and semiquaver groups combined with triplets. This one is typical, and was probably written by Morley before the 1890s when he was playing a seven-stringed banjo with one of the minstrel troupes. It has the fourth string tuned to D, and there are three movements, in C, G, and F major, with the second one, in G, being notable for a continuous flow of triplets for eight bars. The right hand fingering for that section would have impressed the banjoists of that period, so this publication shows it in detail.
