Three Traditional Songs
THREE TRADITIONAL SONGS
This is an arrangements of songs which were popular over two hundred years ago, and have remained so to the present time. ‘Believe me, if all those endearing young charms’ has an unusual emotional background, and ‘Sweet Lass of Richmond Hill’ has another human story attached. The melody of ‘Drink to me only with thine eyes’ pre-dates the words, which were written by Ben Jonson and published in 1616. A brief history, and the first verse of each piece is included for those who are interested. The arrangements sit well on the banjo and might be improved by using a mute, but a sympathetic approach is needed: — think ‘Pompadour’ rather than ‘Gold Diggers’.
