Three Irish Melodies

Classical Guitar Solos

The first of these pieces, ‘The Gaelic Farmer’ seems to be one of those traditional harp solos passed down from one player to another.   It fits very easily onto the guitar and has a cheerful attractive tune.

Elizabeth MacDermott Roe was the granddaughter of Carolan’s patroness, Mary MacDermott Roe, and this piece is one of his quiet, graceful airs, having a simple appealing melody.

The third solo is another good tune which flows so naturally that it almost seems to have written itself, and is an excellent example of Carolan’s wonderful gift for melodic invention.   The family seat of Lord Inchiquin was at Dromoland Castle, in County Clare, and Carolan visited the area in about 1730, which is probably the time when this tune was composed.
