The Sports Parade
THE SPORTS PARADE
Morley wrote several ‘Parades’ which could be played for the ‘walk-round’ which often began the minstrel shows, and this is one of his finest. The keys are G and C major with a short Interlude in A minor which modulates into a repeat of the C major section. Beware of the repeat of the second movement which ends the piece because it is not quite the same as the first time: it also includes a couple of final bars as a very short Coda. There are some quick shifts for the left hand, but they can be accomplished by careful attention to the fingering, and a public performance will benefit by observance of the unusually (for Morley) detailed dynamic markings. Most experienced players would agree that this is one of the best marches written for the banjo.
