The Jolly Mariner

If you expect to hear a jolly rollicking shanty-like sea song, then you will be sadly disappointed.   Cammeyer seemed to be adept at inventing unsuitable titles; for example his famous ‘Bolero’ which is not written in bolero time, and a tuneful ‘Minuet’ written in gavotte time, so it should not come as a surprise that this attractive melody is a gentle lyrical piece, similar to his ‘Harvest Song’ and ‘A Sonnet’.    So forget the title, but do learn to play the solo, because it is not at all difficult, with one or two of his favourite discords resolving nicely at the end of a phrase, making it a very satisfying piece for the performer and also for almost any kind of audience, — except, possibly, drunken sailors.

Cammeyer and Bernard Sheaff recorded it as a duet, and the first part is rather sparse in places, so the two parts have been carefully combined in this publication to provide a more complete harmony than printed in original solo but, at the same time, keeping it easy to play.
