The Gold Diggers

THE GOLD DIGGERS

An old copy of this solo has, at the foot of the first page, in very small type: C.E. & Co. 2, which suggests that it was one of the very early publications of the Clifford Essex Company when it was formed over a century ago.   Morley would have been in his early thirties, and this piece represents the result of a request to write a really easy March.  In the keys of G, E minor, and C major, it certainly does what was wanted, and thousands of banjoists must have had the solo in their repertoire over the years.    It has been reported that Morley himself disliked the piece, considering that it was ‘too simple’; — but not everyone has Morley’s technique, and it is an excellent solo for any player to master before thinking of attempting the technical requirements of ‘Ad Astra’ or ‘Mazeppa’!
