The Firefly Polka

THE  FIREFLY  POLKA

This solo is one of Morley’s early compositions, probably written before 1896 while he was still using a six-stringed banjo, because it has the fourth string tuned to D.   Although many pieces of the 1890s were fairly simple, it should not be surprising to find that Morley was already writing solos such as this one, which is not only tuneful, but also a little more demanding than most, from the technical aspect.   In this piece he uses the keys of G, D, and C, while venturing up to play in positions above the tenth fret several times.   This, at a period when some players needed to be shown where they could find A on the first string!   A fairly good technique is required if it is to be played at ‘Morley Speed’ but, like most of his solos, it doesn’t have to be played fast for it to be appreciated by performer and audience alike.
