Sunbeam Sand Dance
SUNBEAM SAND DANCE
The title of this Morley piece suggests that he wrote it some time in the 1890’s, and the fairly simple construction is typical of the solos played in that period. Nevertheless, Morley was not called ‘the lightning banjoist’ for nothing, so it is not surprising to find some groups of notes which are quite tricky to play at a reasonable tempo. This makes the piece more interesting to play than the average solo seen in banjo albums of the 1880’s and 90’s.
A version appeared in the May 1975 issue of BMG, but like so many pieces in the music supplement in those days there were a number of engraving errors, and only one group of notes was fingered. The errors have been corrected in this publication, and I have suggested right and left hand fingering in several places throughout the solo.
