St. Louis Tickle
LOUIS TICKLE
Ben Harney was a famous ragtime pianist who claimed to have originated that style of playing. Born in 1871, he was still in his teens when he started to write syncopated music which soon attracted the attention of the public and produced many imitators. He died just before his sixty-seventh birthday in 1938. This title is one of the best known ragtime pieces and, although it was originally a piano solo, it sounds as if it was written for the banjo. It should be played at a moderate speed, — to quote Scott Joplin, “It is never right to play ‘Ragtime’ fast”.
