Spinet
SPINET
As well as being a fine banjoist, Bert Bassett was an accomplished pianist and cellist, so it is not surprising that he wrote some very musical banjo solos. The Spinet was an early form of harpsichord, popular for about a hundred years from about the end of the 17th century, so Bassett has written the piece in the form of a Bourrée, with the banjo imitating the sound of the plucked string keyboard instrument.
A simplified version appeared many years ago in the ‘B.M.G.’ magazine, but this edition includes the original harmonies as written by Bassett, presenting a more attractive solo without making undue demands on the performer’s technique, especially if close attention is given to the dynamic and tempo markings. Written in the keys of G major, E minor and C major, with no technical difficulties involved, it is an ideal solo for all musically-minded banjoists.
