Song of the Harp

Alfred D. Cammeyer wrote some fine melodies, many of them in waltz time, and most of them sounding better when played on a wire strung zither-banjo, rather than the gut or nylon strung open-back banjo.   The first part of this piece particularly relies on the sustaining of the notes because it consists of a series of broken chord phrases played ‘a piacere’, that is, ‘at pleasure’, meaning without any strict adherence to a time-signature, — made the more obvious in this case by the absence of one.   Cammeyer seems to be picturing a harpist idly playing a few arpeggios as a preliminary to the actual tune which, when it comes, is a simple but attractive melody, written in waltz time, but still with plenty of rubato.  The third movement is more strictly in waltz time, but the coda gives another opportunity for ‘expression’, particularly in the last few bars.  This must be one of Cammeyer’s finest solos, — not technically difficult —  and certainly well worth playing.
