Skibbereen

SKIBBEREEN

There are some similarities between this piece and ‘A Banjo Frolic’.  They both use minor keys, starting with C minor, and have the same Introduction, — Morley must have forgotten that he had already used it ! — but the time signature for the ‘Frolic’ is 4/4, and for ‘Skibbereen’ it is 2/4.  Apart from the Introduction and a couple of bars in the first section, the actual tunes are different, and the keys employed in this piece are C minor, and A flat major, with their two Relatives, E flat major, and F minor.  The number of flats may make the piece look daunting, but in fact these are natural keys for the banjo, so the average player should have no trouble with it.  Skibbereen is on the south coast of Ireland where Morley toured with a concert party in the early part of the 1914-1918 War.
