Rondeau

RONDEAU

There was never a definite number or type of dance used in the Suites  of the 17th and 18th Centuries, but among the contrasting styles, the Rondeau, consisting of a main theme repeated and developed, was included by some composers.   The gavotte, bourrée, menuet, sarabande and gigue were all used, with the last named frequently being the final movement in the Suite.   However, in this particular example of the form, the Rondeau is placed last because in it, the dramatic effect is increased by an accelerando, as more notes are fitted into a bar, resulting in a fitting climax to the whole Suite.
