Joe Morley wrote some fine banjo solos and, although this is one of the best, it seems to be little known—perhaps because it is not for the faint-hearted; but a little concentrated practice will give most players a satisfying sense of achievement and a worthwhile addition to their repertoire.  This is one of the three Morley pieces published by J.E. Dallas in 1928, the other two being ‘Radio Jig’ and ‘Pimpernel’, and this one deserves a better title.

There are engraving errors in the original which have been corrected in this edition. The keys are C minor, and A flat major, which lie comfortably under the left hand, but there are one or two very quick changes of position which need to be taken slowly until the fingers and brain learn the pattern.  There is an interesting and unusual four bar extension to the third movement, and some parts sound a little odd until played at the right tempo, but you are advised not to attempt speed until you have become very familiar with the piece.
