Pongo’s Parade

PONGO’S  PARADE

Apparently ‘pongo’ was a derogatory word for a soldier and is also the name of a species of ape, so we can only assume that whoever named this solo was ignorant of the meanings but liked the alliteration.  The title apart, it is a good example of a Morley march, although it has similarities to some of his other compositions, which is not surprising considering that he wrote over two hundred pieces.  This one consists of an Introduction, four sections, two in C major and two in F, and a short Coda.  There are some good tunes here, especially the fourth movement, which requires some fairly quick shifting if played at the correct tempo, but it is well worth the effort.
