Mister Jollyboy
MISTER JOLLYBOY
Emile Grimshaw was, with Ellis, Cammeyer and Morley, one of the more prolific composers of banjo music in the heyday of the instruments’ popularity. He had an ear for a good tune, and a flair for writing his melodies so that the average banjoist found them easy to play.
This piece is typical in that it is tuneful, and not at all difficult, being entirely in the easy key of C minor, with a slow Introduction followed by a contrasting quick Dance. Interest is maintained for the listener by changes in dynamics, which should be carefully observed, together with ritenutos and vibratos. This piece was a favourite of many BMG Orchestras, and should be in the repertoire of all keen banjoists.
