Mauna Loa
MAUNA LOA
Joe Morley probably wrote this piece during the 1920s, when the acoustic Hawaiian Guitar was popular, and John Alvey Turner published it about 1925, with a very imaginative line drawing of mountains on the cover. Morley played it at Turner’s Annual Concert in 1931, together with ‘Mazeppa’, which would have provided a complete contrast, because ‘Mazeppa’ is a test of skill and technique, whilst ‘Mauna Loa’ is an easy, tuneful solo written in the keys of G, D, and C major. The slides in the third section can be very effective, especially if the player follows Morley’s advice and uses a cork between the perch pole and the vellum. Another interesting point is that Morley actually marks the dynamics,—a fairly rare addition among his published pieces—and even more surprising is that they vary from mf to a very quiet pp.
