‘LONESOME ROAD’

This arrangement of ‘Lonesome Road’ pulls out all the stops.  It combines hammer-ons, slides, pull-offs, a fingered fifth string and pretty much every other technique you’ve ever learnt and uses almost every inch of the banjo neck.  It’s in three breaks – the first a hard-driving, straight ahead, Scruggs style version, the second a break up the neck and the third a melodic version.  The second part uses the fifth string as an additional melody string, and you’ll need to finger it (or thumb it) with whichever left hand digit is free.  Using the fifth string in this way produces chromatic runs and enhancements to the chord structure which you couldn’t achieve simply using the fifth string as a drone. The ending is a piece of pure self-indulgence and a nod to those bluegrass players who get so carried away with a tune that they don’t know how to end it.  Again, you’ll need to finger the fifth string high up the neck for the final burst.
