LIMERICK RACES
It is well known that Morley spent his early years busking, and one of the lucrative places for buskers was a race meeting. Limerick racecourse in Eire was then, as now, a popular venue for those who enjoy the excitement of horse racing, and it is quite probable that Morley composed this solo during a visit. The piece consists of four tunes with an Irish flavour: an expert may recognise them as genuine Irish melodies, but Morley does not name them, and they could well be his own compositions. The 6/8 tempo readily conveys the feeling of galloping horses, and the suggested tempo of a dotted crotchet to 110 could be faster, but players should keep something in reserve for the accelerando at the end.
