Jumbo Rag
JUMBO RAG
Apparently, Bert Bassett had a well-developed sense of humour, and I think this title is an example. The sub-title is ‘An Indian Syncopation’, and the opening section consists of slow, plodding chords, suggestive of an elephant walking, but in addition, there is a connection with his recordings, which were on the ‘Jumbo’ label. In fact, he recorded this solo on the ‘Jumbo’ label in 1913, when he was twenty.
Apart from the slow C minor Introduction and a short four-bar Interlude, there are three main sections, the first two continuing in C minor, and the third, a fine piece of syncopation, in A flat. The first section is repeated, and the piece ends with a short Coda.
The whole solo is well-written and worthy of attention by all moderately accomplished players.
