Frank Lawes was known as ‘fifthless Frank’ because he played a plectrum banjo fingerstyle, and his technique was so brilliant that he could accomplish the most difficult fingerstyle solos with ease. His outstanding ability prompted Clifford Essex to publish ‘Hot Frets’, which became an immediate success, and was the forerunner of many other popular titles in a similar style.
