Clifford Essex first heard Joe Morley play in 1891, and offered to buy some of his solos for publication.   Essex had been impressed by Morley’s playing speed, and this was one of the pieces he offered to publish, so it is not surprising to see, under Morley’s name as the composer, an extra line in brackets: ‘The lightning Player’.   At first sight this would appear to be a very simple piece, — all in the key of C minor and not a great deal of position playing, so that if taken at a moderate tempo there are no difficulties, even for a beginner.   But a good right-hand technique is required if you play it at Morley speed, and a sure positioning of your left hand is essential, or you will find yourself fumbling.

This solo, mentioned in the Morley Biography, is well over a hundred years old, but it is worth playing, if only to appreciate what Morley was capable of in his early twenties, — although he would probably have played it somewhat faster than the suggested tempo of a crotchet to 112!
