Grey Eagle
‘GREY EAGLE’
Traditional – Arranged by David Cotton
Grey Eagle is a traditional American fiddle tune, often played in bluegrass competitions, partly because of its complexity and partly because it extends beyond the usual two-sections-with-repeat format prevalent in bluegrass music. Fiddle players mix the sections quite randomly, and the version here combines elements of the best versions we have heard in a note for note arrangement. The tablature is designed to make it as accessible to fingerstyle players as to seasoned bluegrasss players. Where the tablature suggests fingering (or thumbing) the 5th string, a favourite technique of more advanced bluegrass players, fingerstyle players may like to transfer the notes back to the 1st string: the overall effect is the same. It’s a challenging piece with some impressive leaps in the latter sections.
