This is a quiet, gentle Morley composition, in the style of his well-known solo ‘Pompadour’, and should not be confused with his ‘Gavotte de Concert’, because this one was not published in his lifetime.   It has been edited from three sources; the first being an inaccurate publication in the July 1965 BMG, which omitted the fingering, —  most important for the sound of the piece.  It also added a very florid second part which was certainly not written by Morley.

The second source was a very simple manuscript in Morley’s hand, bearing the title ‘Morceau’, and seeming to be a first draft of what eventually became the present more ornate solo, with a different title.   The third source was another manuscript, similar to the version now published, and showing the special fingering, where Morley exploits the mellow sound of the lower strings.

This little gem of a piece is not difficult, although some of the fingering may seem odd at first, but if it is carefully followed, the player will find that there is always a reason for it.   It should not be played very fast, and will sound better if a second banjoist can be found to provide the accompanying part which is included with this publication.
