Flesh Hoop/Vellum Wire
1/8” square or round rolled brass
A flesh hoop is a wire ring that fits around the banjo rim and is essential if fitting a calf or goat skin to your banjo head. If your banjo previously had a plastic head, it doesn’t have a flesh hoop.
We supply flesh hoops in 11” and 12” diameters, however, if you require a custom size hoop/wire, please email us (info@cliffordessex.com)
Our hoops are unjoined (see pics) and cut slightly larger than the requested size so you can adjust for the thickness of your skin and the diameter of your tension hoop.
Round or square
Square: Square brass flesh hoops are generally preferred over round ones. This is because its flat edges create a very tight “bite” on the skin, ensuring the head never slips loose once mounted
Round: Offers a smooth surface that prevents the animal hide from tearing or puncturing during installation or tightening.
* Classic banjo restoration and makers of historical calf or goat skin heads prefer an unjoined hoop. This flexibility allows the hoop to settle and conform perfectly to the uneven thickness of the organic skin and the banjo rim
