Fairyland Schottische

FAIRYLAND  SCHOTTISCHE

Essex & Cammeyer published this piece by Morley in the early 1890s, and the title is typical of that period when banjo solos were based on the polka, barn dance, waltz, and similar popular dance forms of the day.  But while most of his contemporaries, such as Herbert J. Ellis, were writing quite simple solos, Morley’s pieces involve a requirement for a little more thought and better technique.

The three sections are in the keys of C,G, and F, with many repeats indicated, but most players these days will cut some of them, although the original solo had the words ‘The lightning player’ under Morley’s name, and he would have streaked through it in about three minutes, dazzling the audience with his technique, and having them shouting for more.
