ELECTRA POLKA

This is something of a mystery solo.   The title was recorded by Morley for his friend Tarrant Bailey Senior on one of the latter’s cylinder machines some time around 1918.    It is listed by John Alvey Turner as number 130 of their ‘Joe Morley’s Compositions’, but it does not appear in all their lists, and the number disappears in their later publications.   A banjo writer in a  BMG of sixty years ago mentioned it as being one of Morley’s difficult solos, and gives the impression that it was not published for that reason.

Fortunately, a tape recording was made by A.P. Sharpe of many cylinder recordings by Morley, and ‘Electra’ was one of them.   I was sent a cassette copy of the tape many years ago, and I have recently spent some time transcribing the piece so that interested players can try their hand at a virtually unknown Morley solo which is in the same category as ‘Ad Astra’, and ‘Mazeppa’.   Experienced banjoists will enjoy playing it, average players should look upon it as a challenge, and beginners could make good use of it to improve their technique!
