El Contrabandista
EL CONTRABANDISTA (Bolero)
According to the reminiscences of old-time banjoists writing in the BMG many years ago, Alfred D. Cammeyer published his Bolero, — a difficult, Spanish-sounding piece written in 4/4 time, — without realising that a true bolero should be in 3/4 time. Typically, Cammeyer ignored all criticism, intimating that if he called the piece a bolero, then that’s what it was. It has been suggested that Morley wrote this solo some years later, to show how a bolero should sound on the banjo, although some sources maintain that at least part of the solo was written before Cammeyer published his piece. Whatever the truth, this remains one of Morley’s most popular compositions, although it must be rated as quite difficult, and requiring a good technical ability.
