Concert March
CONCERT MARCH
Richard Tarrant Bailey Senior made the original cylinder recording of this piece in 1918, with the composer, Joe Morley, playing it at his usual considerable speed. The transcription was made some years ago, before the advent of the clever computer programs which can slow down the tempo but retain the pitch, so there may be some discrepancies with any original manuscript, if there is such a thing extant.
As far as I know, the solo was never published, which is a great pity, because it is a fine march and, like so many of Morley’s pieces, would sound superb if arranged for military band. However, not surprisingly, it also sounds well on the banjo, with a particularly attractive fourth section, — and you don’t have to play it at ‘Morley speed’, unless, like him, you are planning to record it in two and a half minutes.
