CLOCKWORK  DONKEY

This novelty solo was written in memory of a toy donkey, long gone to rest, after giving much pleasure to a small child.   ‘Donk’ would be slowly wound up, deposited on the floor, and closely watched as he (she?) walked steadily across the room.   At least, this is what happened for the first year or so but, as with many much-loved and much-used toys, a mechanical defect eventually appeared which made the poor creature miss a step every now and again.   But Donk managed to lurch around for many months until the spring became so worn that the initial steady pace only lasted for a minute or two before gradually slowing to a halt.   In this musical version of Donk’s faltering footsteps, a couple of turns of the key allow for a proper finish to the piece.
