Clifford Essex Regal 5-String Resonator Banjo with Original Hard Case

A rare opportunity to own a beautifully crafted Clifford Essex Regal five-string resonator banjo, complete with its original wooden hard case.

Featuring a stunning mahogany neck, ebony fingerboard and peghead overlay, exquisitely engraved mother-of-pearl floral inlays, and the distinctive ‘Regal’ logo, this instrument is a wonderful example of British banjo craftsmanship. Its patented top-tension double-wall rim, flange, and tone ring deliver excellent projection and a warm, balanced voice.

The decorative resonator is enhanced with elegant marquetry star detailing and side banding, while the original bone armrest adds to its authenticity. There is some honest playwear consistent with age (please refer to the photographs), but importantly there are no cracks, and the frets remain in very good condition.

This banjo has been fully serviced by one of our professional luthiers and is supplied ready to play.

A rare, high-quality vintage instrument offering effortless playability, superb craftsmanship, and timeless character. A wonderful choice for collectors, performers, and enthusiasts alike.

Product Details

Crafted in England by Clifford Essex & Son between 1936 and 1942, the Regal occupied the middle of the company’s prestigious range, sitting above the Popular and Imperial models and below the celebrated Paragon. Designed for traditional and classic banjo playing, it performs best with lighter, period-correct strings rather than modern heavy-tension sets.
