CIRCUS  PARADE

The ‘Parade’ was virtually the same as the ‘Walk Round’ where the whole Company of an entertainment show, such as the minstrels or pierrots, was introduced to an audience.  In his early days Morley was a member of several groups of this kind at different times, so it is not surprising that ‘Parades’ and ‘Walk Rounds’ are among his compositions.   The essential thing about the opening number was that it had to be bright and attractive with a simple melody, and Circus Parade meets those requirements with its foot-tapping six-eight time and tuneful sections in the easy keys of C and F major.  In the third section the melody is mainly on the fourth string, giving the impression of a trombone solo in a circus brass band.
