CARRY ON

Alfred Kirby was a brilliant banjoist who wrote many original solos, but most were too difficult for the average player, and so they were never published.    The titles that he published privately were ‘Riverside March’,  ‘Heather Bloom’, ‘Lazing Around’, and ‘Restless Rag’, and I heard these many years ago when he gave a London recital which amazed the audience present.   This title, ‘Carry On’, was another played on that occasion, and banjoists were given the opportunity of trying it for themselves, when it was printed in the ‘BMG’ magazine.    Fortunately, this very attractive piece is not one of Kirby’s difficult solos, so tablature players as well as notation readers are now able to have the pleasure and satisfaction of learning it.
