This solo should not be confused with the Clifford Essex publication of the same name — also by Morley — which has a six-eight time signature.   This one was taken from a photocopy of Morley’s original fully fingered MS. which, it seems, was never published, although if it had been, it probably would have had another title, unless, as is possible, the published ‘Butterfly’ was written after this one.

The piece is in quadruple time, and consists of an Introduction, four sections and a Coda, using the keys of G and C major.  It is an excellent example of Morley’s technique for playing diatonic and chromatic runs, so don’t be put off by the amount of fingering, — it is the same as on the original, and is there to help!
