Belle of the Pantomime
BELLE OF THE PANTOMIME
Like the Court Beauties Gavotte, this is another of Joe Morley’s early compositions with the fourth string tuned to D. It, too, was probably written in the early 1890s when he was still playing a six or seven stringed banjo with one of the bass strings permanently tuned to D, but there all similarities end, because it is a very different kind of solo. It is subtitled ‘Schottische’ and is full of triplets and dotted quavers which Morley probably played at quite a fast tempo. The keys are C, G, and F major and, although it doesn’t demand a high standard of ability, some of the fingering needs careful attention.
