This beautifully made Clifford Essex Hoop (American Pot) is made of walnut featuring an integrated Brazilian ebony tone ring, tapered to the top. The hoop is block built with red African padauk wood binding on the bottom.
The heart of this banjo hoop is the Brazilian ebony integrated tone ring. Well known for its super acoustic qualities which produces a tremendous woody tone. Brazilian ebony is very difficult to source in the UK, we currently import it from the United States.
Depth 2 and 3/4 inches. Thickness 1/2 inch. We know from experience that a 1/2″ thick hoop produces a superior tone to a 3/4″ thick hoop.

As previously mentioned, the tone ring material is Brazilian Ebony which has a Janka Hardness 3692. If you are not familiar with the Janka Hardness standard, this is what it means. The Janka number is the number of pounds of force it takes to embed a steel ball, 0.44” in diameter, exactly halfway into wood. On my chart, Brazilian Ebony comes under Lignum Vitae, probably the hardest known wood. Lignum Vitae has a Janka Hardness of 4500. Brazilian Ebony is certainly the hardest wood we have ever worked with and makes an excellent tone ring for the head to vibrate on. So, if our sums are correct, it would take approximately 1.85 tonnes of pressure to embed the 0.44” ball halfway into Brazilian Ebony. Some tone ring!
