Banjo Capers
BANJO CAPERS
Among his enormous output of original solos Morley wrote a few novelty pieces, as proof that, despite the obvious fact that he took his public performances seriously, he did have a quiet sense of humour. Mentioned in his Biography, this one not only includes the well-known bridge rasp, but also a buzzing sound produced on the fourth string, and a rather quiet noise somewhere between scratching and scraping, described by the direction ‘rub vellum’. I had problems recording this effect, because using my fingertips produced a very quiet sound, so in the end I used my fingernails: — players are urged to experiment.
Written in the keys of G, E minor and C major, it is an easy piece to play, apart from a little dexterity needed to fit the novelty parts in to the time available.
