Alabama Sand Dance

ALABAMA  SAND DANCE

The Sand Dance, apparently derived from the soft-shoe dance, was performed at a fairly slow tempo, and was characterised by flowing movements where the dancer’s feet brushed the ground or the stage floor which had been sprinkled with sand.   The rhythms are mainly dotted quaver and semiquaver groups with occasional triplets, making for a relaxed dance movement, completely different from tap or clog dancing, which were equally popular from the late eighteen hundreds onward.  From the banjoists point of view there is nothing difficult in this piece, but it does require some quick shifting in places, so don’t expect to play it perfectly at sight.   There are three sections, the first two in C major, and the Trio is in F.
